Our Lombard Street Staff
Laralei Vander Putten-Kane
Site Director - Laralei has been with the Escuala Viva family almost since its inception. First as a parent, then a volunteer, a teacher and finally as a director. Her experience in all aspects of the school has given her a great opportunity to experience the ins and outs of being part of a loving community. Both her children, son Oliver and daughter Logan began their experience back in 2004 with Escuela Viva and are now both living and working here in Portland where they continue to share stories of the fun they had and the things they learned. Laralei enjoys the current role she plays in the Escuela Viva community as the director, and auxiliary support for the teachers and children. She has been a long time resident of the Cathedral Park neighborhood where she shares a home with her husband Kevin and their numerous small creatures. She loves to go on adventures, spend time with friends and family, dance, dine out and play. She enjoys every minute - rain or shine. (Laralei joined the EV team in 2005.)
Jeff Adams
Hello everybody! My name is Jeff Adams. I was born and raised in New York City and then moved to Arizona where I started my family and then started my education journey. I am a father of a beautiful daughter and a wonderful son. I love sports and I love to go camping. I also enjoy staying in sometimes and watching a good movie. I look forward to getting to know all of you. Thank you for welcoming me into your community!
Carlos Lopez-Mendoza
From high school to nine years later I have always had a special place in my heart for childhood health and education. From summers in high school volunteering as a counselor at Canyonview to working in pediatric clinics and hospitals. My work has always centered around caring for the health and wellbeing of children. Having spent time around children of all ages I have fostered a passion specifically for early childhood and hope to bring a unique perspective and learn and grow with Escuela Viva!
Emma Skow
Hi, my name is Emma! I’ve been working in the childcare industry for about 4 years, at EV and as a private nanny. I really enjoy helping kids learn about bugs, animals, and gardening, and finding their interests to support their learning in what they love. Some of my hobbies are hiking, hanging out with my dog, and horse riding. I’ve lived in St. John’s for pretty much my whole life and I’m excited to work with EV on Lombard to be more involved with my community.
Maeson Graff
My name is Maeson Graff, and I’d love to share a little bit about myself. I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to the beautiful PNW when I was 7 years old. I grew up in Southwest Portland and graduated from Ida B. Wells High School in 2020 (yes, I was a COVID grad!). I went on to pursue a degree in Elementary Education at Western Kentucky University and graduated in 2024. After graduation, I traveled through Central and South America for six months. During my travels, I lived in a small surf and fishing town on the Ecuadorian coast, where I was immersed in the local culture. I participated in celebrations and holidays and had the opportunity to learn more about the community and their way of life. I also traveled to a small town called Latacunga, where I volunteered with an after-school English program, helping students practice and develop their English skills. After traveling, I worked at Mt. Hood Meadows Playschool, where I led a mixed-age preschool classroom. There, I learned about the importance of the natural world in child development, which has become one of my primary teaching philosophies. I have watched children grow in confidence while exploring nature, develop a deeper sense of curiosity, and learn to play and collaborate with their peers. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy thrifting, snowboarding, cooking, and spending time with my family, friends, and my cat. I am passionate about using my skills and experience to nurture young minds and create a classroom environment where children feel safe, valued, and motivated to learn. I am so excited to begin this journey with all of the new students at Escuela Viva! I look forward to spending the year with you all! Please message me through the brightwheel app with any questions, or ask at pickup or drop off."
Jobe Fallen
My name is Teacher Jobe, and I am so excited to be part of the Preschool for All and Escuela Viva community here in downtown St. Johns. I love working in early childhood education and I have been doing it for a long time! I recently completed a graduate certificate in Infant/Toddler Mental Health and an Indigenous First Steps Early Childhood Education certificate through PSU, and I am currently working toward my Master's in Early Childhood Education with a focus on inclusive classrooms — because all children, no matter how they interact with and see the world, deserve wonderful early learning spaces. My classrooms are rooted in community. Together, we learn how to be a good friend and responsible community member, cultivating our social skills and emotional health along the way. All feelings are acknowledged here, building a foundation of safety and trust — with the goal of JOY through play, play, play. I am a first-generation Filipino American, and outside the classroom I love spending time with my friends and family — especially making big meals and eating together. I also love painting, quilting, gardening, and working on my very old Harley Davidson motorcycle — because it's always broken!
Serena Camarillo
My name is Serena, and I'll be in the Teacher Aide position. I am from Hilo, Hawai'i, and moved to Oregon in 2022 to pursue my Bachelor's degree in Social Work and minor in Child, Youth, and Families Studies at Portland State University (PSU). I graduated from PSU in June 2026 and am excited to start a new chapter here. I interned at LifeWorks NW Children's Relief Nursery for my senior year at PSU, and I loved it! I had a lot of fun, learned a lot, and made connections with all of the students. Through my internship, I've gained experience with infants to 5-year-olds, families, and teachers. Outside of work, I love hanging out with my friends and family, taking long walks, going to the beach, and exploring Oregon! I'm looking forward to creating relationships and supporting your students in the classroom. I'm excited to get to know you all!
Alanna McIntosh
I’ve been working in childcare for over 17 years and have been lucky to work with children and families in a variety of settings, including childcare, summer/winter break camps, and before- and after-school programs. Over the years, I’ve grown from working directly with children in the classroom to leading programs, supporting staff, and overseeing multiple sites. My favorite part of working in childcare has always been, and will always be, the connections with children and families and the silly little moments that are remembered for years. I’m an energetic, organized person who loves planning engaging activities and events, as well as thinking ahead about the future. I believe that when staff and families feel supported and connected, it creates an even better experience for the children. When I’m not at work, you’ll usually find me at home with my two senior dogs, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca. (Yes, I’m a Star Wars fan!) I enjoy cooking and baking, and I’m currently figuring out the world of sourdough—I’m so close to the perfect loaf! I also love reading and watching movies, and I’m slowly getting better at crocheting cute little animals and plants, with the hopes of eventually making blankets and clothing.
